Author’s note: This is a poem about the different things you can find in the attic of a house…This is one of my favorite poems to date, and I hope you like it too.

The dark and gloomy room,
spiderwebs and dust,
Old iron ornaments,
Now adorned with rust.

Boxes sealed with duct tape,
Scribbled handwriting on the labels,
Tell-tale pictures and letters,
Filled with stories and fables.

Broken shards of glass,
And ribbons specked with red,
Polaroid of a chocolate brown
Dog on a single bed

Vinyl records and trading cards
A girl in braids and glasses,
Family toasting marshmallows,
And watching the wood crumble to ashes

Smiles of a father and son,
Holding a 10-pound fish,
A two-year-old toddler,
Blowing her candle, making a wish.

Eggnog on Christmas,
The city filled with colorful lights,
An aspiring teenage poet,
Staring into the starry night…

These photographs, letters, memories,
Make up the essence of humankind,
Stuff that is too important,
For anyone to leave behind.

Emotional importance by far surpasses,
The importance of materialistic things,
After all, it’s the stories on forgotten letters,
That continue the legend of generous kings.

So, even if these old memorabilia,
Seems like a waste of space today,
Trust me, they’ll make you smile
As you live life on your way.

Memories make you who you are.
Never let them go.
